Close Encounters of The OMG Kind, Part VIII
Scoping out Area 51. Photo by Jenny Hodges (Omigod, Dibs!)
I hopped in the passenger seat and shut the car door behind me. Jenny was trying to sleep in the driver seat, covered with a jacket that she was using as a blanket. "I spotted something with the binoculars", I told her. "Really? What?" she asked. I told her that I had spotted two cameras on the hill, "just over there", I said to her as I pointed into the direction where I saw them. She looked from the comfort of the car, but didn't want to get out to see anything because she was cold and tired at this point. Me, I was beginning to get antsy. Within the first hour of parking our car on the side of the highway to camp out in the desert near Area 51, I had already spotted a couple of cameras. I was wanting to see more!
I kept myself awake halfway through the night, waiting for amazing things to happen. I got out of the car several times to stand in the middle of the empty highway in the middle of the desert, looking up into the clear starry night sky, waiting to see something, anything. I did see something that was really amazing. Something that most people, especially now-a-days, don't get see much at all, and that's the uninterrupted natural beauty of the night sky. No light pollution, no obstructions of any sort, just millions upon millions of tiny light sources swathed clear across the night sky. With Jenny asleep at the wheel, I stood there with no other soul around, or at least that I could see anyway, on a planet that was dancing a galactic waltz through the cosmos with other celestial objects spread apart many light years away.
As the night wore on, and night became the very early morning hours of the next day I waited to see more from within the car. When I finally decided to settle in for the night in the front passenger seat, I faced my body sideways in the seat, looking in the direction of the driver's-side and rear driver's-side seats so that I could keep watch out the windows toward the mysterious pitch black desert outside. As I grew ever more sleepy, I caught a glimpse of a very bright light way out in the desert hills towards the direction where the dirt road off the main road we were camping on went to the entrance of Area 51. It was like a spot light, that shown like a giant white laser clear across the terrain, but only for a brief moment. I thought maybe it was security scanning the land for something, maybe. I kept seeing glimpses of head lights far in the distance peering in and out from behind the hills, but never saw much more than that. No strange lights in the sky, nothing too much out of the ordinary, but one can't expect to see much now-a-days that this place is secret no more. I mean, the government can't be that foolish to continue top secret UFO flights in the night in a world wide known test facility, right?
