Close Encounters of The OMG Kind, Part V
Four Corners. Photo by Dustin Hodges (Omigod, Dibs!™)
So, there we were, putzing along the first road we could turn on after passing through the checkpoint at Los Alamos Laboratories, not knowing where we were going to go and not knowing what we were going to do. They let us in yes, but we had no idea what we were doing or what we could see. We didn’t think that we could just show up and stroll around the facilities, and have a look at what they were doing in this place. After all, we thought we were going into town. “Let’s just turn around.”
We chickened out. We turned around and went right back towards the exit of the checkpoint. We were frantically trying to search on our GPS where the hell we were going. “Where is the town?” I could clearly see the guy who let us in still watching us as he attended other vehicles coming in. “Great”, I said aloud. “We don’t look suspicious at all!” I thought sarcastically. The guy probably thought we were crazy or something! After some reassessing of the situation we found our way into Los Alamos quickly and found a shopping center not far from where we had just left that had a restaurant that intrigued us enough to stop, take a break, and get a bite to eat.
“Okay, where next?” We figured that our next course of action was to head north toward Colorado, maybe drive up to Pagosa Springs, head west toward Durango and then on to Cortez, visiting these areas along the way. Our main objective was to go to Four Corners where we’d always wanted to visit and where a special surprise awaited.
The drive through Colorado was fairly quick in the sense that we didn’t really stop much to do anything accept to enjoy the scenery. We had stopped for the night somewhere to rest before taking on the drive to Four Corners, so we were able to enjoy the land at early morning sunrise which is always nice in a place like Colorado. Once we arrived at Four Corners the sun was already a quarter the way up in the sky, although we really couldn’t tell much because the cloud cover was coming in and it was about to start raining soon.
When we arrived at the entrance to Four Corners it hadn’t opened yet. There were a few vehicles of tourists there, but not many, so we waited in our car until they opened the gates for us. Where the Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico boundary lines met was a large area squared off in the middle of nowhere in the desert terrain with a walking area that allowed the visitor to read plaques of history and stroll from territory to territory in a matter of feet. It was quite extraordinary to be able to step into any four of the states within a matter of seconds or even at the same time if you stood in the middle where a medallion in the ground marked the intersection of the state lines.
Four Corners was a neat place to be. I mean, think of it, you’re in an area that four imaginary state lines meet to a single point marked by man, and are able to physically stand over all four states at the same time. That’s pretty incredible! There were local venders set up around the whole area selling knick-knacks and handmade items, and jewelry. That location marked by four state corners is where I secretly proposed to my now, wife. As we stood there together, I asked her softly, “Will you marry me?” She said yes, gave me a kiss and I slipped onto her finger a cheap ring I had just purchased by a native vender to use as a make-shift engagement ring. After several minutes of us being there it began to rain lightly and we decided that it was time to go. We pulled back onto the road, and once we had the chance, got out the car to take a picture at the Arizona state line of ourselves, the newly engaged couple. Our life journey just beginning, on the road.
